Thoughts from the Narrow Way
Marketing specialists know well that the desire for personal meaning and happiness is what drives the human spirit. They may not understand why, but they know that it does; and they exploit it to their benefit. We know why this longing drives us: it is how God made us! The meaning and happiness we long for is God Himself! Jesus tells us in today’s gospel that ‘this is the time of fulfillment’. He speaks of the ‘fulfillment’ of God’s eternal plan in Christ. It is a ‘fulfillment’ that affects the longing of the human heart as well. ‘Repent and believe in the gospel.’ (Mk 1: 15) This is the sure way to human fulfillment: repenting of sin and choosing to live according to our Lord’s teaching. It is a lifelong process, however. The pleasures of this world apparently fulfill human longing much more easily and quickly. But the apparent satisfaction soon passes, doesn’t it? The phantom fulfillment leaves in its wake sadness, regret, and, oftentimes, deep sorrow. The lifelong process of repenting and believing truly fulfills the eternal longing of the human spirit. It helps us navigate the trials of life, while preparing the immortal soul for the glory of heaven!
May the peace of our Lord be with you always,
Father Michael
